Over time, the rubber tires on feed rollers wear down, become smooth, and lose their grip on the paper.
Located in the paper tray, the pickup roller is responsible for grabbing the top sheet of paper. If you hear the printer grinding but no paper feeds, this roller is bald.
The separation pad creates friction against the pickup roller to ensure only ONE sheet feeds at a time. Worn pads cause multi-page pulls and massive jams in the fuser.
